Alan Whiteside was recently named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), a designation granted by the British Crown.  Whiteside was recognized “for services and strategic interventions to curb HIV/AIDS,” receiving the distinction as part of the United Kingdom’s annual New Year Honours. “

“I am thrilled and delighted to be recognized in this way and I acknowledge the many people who contributed to the work for which I am being honoured,” said Whiteside. “I am thoroughly enjoying my new position in Canada — even the winter — and I’m looking forward to continuing the work I began in South Africa at Laurier and the BSIA.”

The OBE recognizes service to the arts and sciences, public services and work with charitable and welfare organizations. Founded in 1917 to recognize military service, the Order is now used to pay tribute to people making outstanding contributions in a variety of fields
